Who would’ve thought at the beginning of 2020 how much we’d come to rely on the power of virtual communications through platforms like Zoom. From Skype’s early glitch-plagued days to Facetime, WhatsApp video calls and modern VR – virtual is the new normal.
When COVID-19 forced us indoors for months on end, we all had to quickly learn the ins and outs of online chats, video conferences and digital meetings. What seemed a temporary solution to lockdown has transformed into an innovative solution that is allowing us to engage with people across the globe more intimately than ever before. This has opened new doors that never existed before.
From court hearings to doctor consults, job interviews, and new house viewings, Zoom has given us an entirely new way to experience the world. With over 200 million users logging on to the platform, Zoom has brought friends and family, bosses and employees, and health professionals and patients closer together.
A Perfect Alternative
Hypnotherapy can be a very personal and intimate form of treatment that requires a certain degree of trust to exist between therapist and patient. Before embarking on a first hypnotherapy session, these parties must usually meet and become familiar with each other before commencing.
This would often require either a patient travelling to a practice or a therapist travelling to the patient’s home. As such, we’ve set a tone that means we’re required to be in one another’s presence in order for things to work. But the world is different now, all thanks to technologies like Zoom.
Does Zoom Work for Hypnotherapy?
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is still possible through a laptop or smartphone screen. No, you do not need to be in the physical presence of a hypnotherapist to be hypnotized; you merely need to hear their voice.
While on-screen visual interaction may sometimes be necessary at the beginning and the end of a session, the vast majority of the time spent between a hypnotherapist and a patient takes place with the patient at rest and their eyes closed. All the while, the therapist remains focused on assisting their client into a state of deep relaxation.
Safety First
When Zoom first hit the scene back in early 2020, there were many fears raised around the platform’s safety and privacy. Users were justifiably concerned about weaknesses in the platform’s security capacity that could potentially allow uninvited third parties to spy on Zoom sessions. These flaws were quickly identified and addressed, and today, Zoom boasts one of the most secure virtual meeting portals around.
Physical vs Virtual
You may be wondering: “Why the need for virtual hypnotherapy when conventional, in-person sessions have worked for millennia?” While it is true that in-person hypnotherapy does allow for a more engaging experience, the advantage is only marginal, and virtual sessions offer a broad range of additional benefits.
